David Benowitz

David Benowitz has more than 13 years of experience as a criminal defense lawyer. He was a Criminal Defense Attorney/Staff Attorney at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia , recognized as the top criminal public defender office in the country, from 1995-2001, where he represented clients in the litigation of serious juvenile and adult criminal matters including first degree murder, first degree sexual abuse, and armed robbery.

Mr. Benowitz obtained an LL.M. in Trial Advocacy in 2006 from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law. In addition, graduated near the top of his class at George Washington Law School in 1995 where he participated in the DC Law Students in Court Program, and was a member of the George Washington Law Review and the Moot Court Board.

Mr. Benowitz graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991 with honors, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Honors American History.

Jason Kalafat

Jason Kalafat has practiced as a criminal defense attorney since 2002. He began his legal career in 2000 in the Phoenix headquarters of the national law firm of Snell & Wilmer LLP, where he concentrated in the areas of commercial and bankruptcy litigation. In 2002, Mr. Kalafat then focused upon criminal defense and became a Deputy Public Defender with the Maricopa County Office of the Public Defender, serving the nation’s fourth most populous county. While at the Public Defender’s Office, Mr. Kalafat’s practice concentrated on felony cases at the trial level, including homicide, sexual assault, armed robbery, kidnapping, and drug offenses. Mr. Kalafat turned his focus to the prestigious criminal law firm of Kimerer & Derrick in 2005. His practice concentrated on criminal defense matters at the state and federal levels, including appellate and post-conviction cases as well as representing clients before various regulatory and administrative agencies.

As a member at The Law Firm of David Benowitz, Mr. Kalafat represents clients along the full spectrum of criminal defense matters, including DUIs, drug and gun offenses, sexual assault, white collar defense, and federal offenses.

Mr. Kalafat graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 2000 where he participated in the Moot Court program. He has been a guest speaker at the Arizona Public Defender Association annual conference, and has presented on the topics of career development, public interest law, and criminal defense practices at the Arizona State University College of Law the Phoenix School of Law. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in Philosophy in 1997 from West Virginia University, where he was a Purinton Philosophy Scholar and the 1997 WVU Arts & Sciences Graduate of the Year.

He is also a member of Mensa, Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity (Carnegie Mellon chapter), and Harley Owner’s Group.
